Well, summer is starting up around here. I just got back from a Girl Scout celebration with Little Miss, and we officially hit 90 degrees on the thermometer, with Chicago’s corresponding humidity, too. Needless to say, that means the wee ones will be out of school shortly, and my opportunity to get the to gym will become curtailed. I’ve been so “good” (you know I hate using that judgmental word) about going to the gym regularly, and I refuse to let anything create excuses for me. Instead, I’m finding ways to get active with my kids instead of using them as an excuse.
Remember resolution number 2 from earlier this year? Thanks to ZonePerfect®, I was pushed to create resolutions that I’m actually doing an ok job of sticking to (homemade marshmallow fluff in the fridge aside, of course). Resolution number 2, in case you forgot, was to stop with the excuses for why I didn’t go to the gym today. And summer is only long excuse, right? I’m not letting it happen this year, though!
As a win/win, that means they’re getting plenty of exercise and increasing their fitness levels while I’m maintaining mine. When we have fun with it, that makes it easier to convince them to do it again next time, and we build closer relationships as a family, as well. We’ve been doing our best to stay active on the weekends ever since it started to warm up, but with school letting out, this will need to become an every day priority.
And I gotta say, I’m feeling pretty good. I love the fact that we’re all involved in this, and I love that the wee ones even ask to go out and do something fun rather than wanting to curl up inside with some electronic device or a book. It makes me feel good to know that I can be a good role model for them in the hopes that they develop these habits while they’re young and keep them up as they grow older. One of my biggest regrets is never taking advantage of the amazing fitness center we had on campus while at college. I was too intimidated by it and so never went. By tackling fitness in a fun way now, I have my fingers crossed that neither child will ever be intimidated by fitness.
Today? Girl Scout camp where Little Miss and I walked almost 5 miles in addition to the swimming and archery and bouncy house and climbing wall. Tomorrow? It’s pool time!
It would be so easy to let those be activities where the wee ones did them alone, but I’m proud to say that I’m getting active with my kids – and we’re all having a blast doing it.
My top 5 activities to do with them? Easy peasy – you can do them, too!
4: Draw on the driveway!
Of course, with all that running around, if you’re anything like me, your phone battery is constantly running down. (See how I worked running in there again? I’m funny, right?) Good news, I have a USB portable phone charger to give away to one lucky reader. I’ve been using this on my phone and it’s easy to charge on my computer or the way with the included USB cable. It’s saved my bacon more than once! And I know I’m not alone – don’t get caught not fully charged!
