Mocha scones on a board

I may or may not be on a bit of a mocha kick right now. I just shared my mocha donuts a couple weeks ago, and now these.

Sometimes I need to take time for myself before I got to work, so I made mocha scones. After all, scones are a breakfast food, right? Especially mocha scones.

Delicious mocha scones

These scones come together quickly, less than a half hour from start to finish. The melted butter and coffee provide a rich and delicious flavor to the scones, and the glaze, also made with coffee, adds the perfect, decadent finish to them.

These scones are pretty, and they’re a perfect complement to my morning coffee. It’s summer, so you know I’m making my cake batter frappe or java chip frappuccino. I can’t do hot coffee with this weather!

This recipe makes 10 mocha scones, and I freeze half the batch for future mornings when I want something special. I may or may not gift some to the friend who drives carpool this week, too. Friendship has its benefits!

How to Make Mocha Scones

Preheat your oven to 450 degrees, and melt your butter. You want it just barely melted, not hot or boiling at all.

While it melts, mix together your dry ingredients. The oats provide a great bit of texture in these scones, and I love to add them.

Once the butter melts, add the coffee and milk to a liquid measuring cup, along with your egg. Whisk to combine, and add the melted butter and whisk again.

Pour the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients and gently stir until just combined.

Scone dough

Turn the mocha scones dough out onto a lightly floured surface and form into a circle. Pat gently until it is a little less than an inch thick and uniform thickness.

Pat dough into a circle

Use a bench scraper to cut into 10 equal pieces.

Use a board scraper to cut mocha scones

Place the pieces onto a cookie sheet covered by a silpat, alternating directions to ensure the mocha scones don’t rise into each other. Bake in a 450 degree oven for 10 to 12 minutes, until lightly browned and just cracking on the tops.

Baked mocha scones

While the mocha scones cool, mix up your glaze. Add the powdered sugar and cocoa to a small bowl, then add the coffee.

Use a fork to stir it.

If it is too thick, add just a splash to thin it slightly. And I really mean just a splash. No more than this.

Adding just a tiny bit of liquid makes a huge difference with powdered sugar. It never fails to amaze me how little liquid it takes to make it too thin.

Once your mocha scones cool, use that same fork to drizzle the glaze over your scones. Do your best to wait for the glaze to harden for just a few minutes, but if you can’t wait… I can’t say that I blame you.

They’ll stay fresh in a tightly sealed container on your counter for two to three days, or freeze them, tightly sealed, for up to a month.

  2. Bonnie says:

If you eat them in the evening do they keep you up from the caffeine? Thanks!

    • Michelle says:

I have not had that issue. The recipe doesn’t use that much of the drink (divided by 10 scones), and the ingredients list milk, water, and sugar as ingredients before coffee, so I’m guessing the caffeine isn’t that high – it isn’t listed on the bottle of their website. That said, I am extremely sensitive to caffeine and can’t drink it after 10am or so, and I have not had a problem eating these for an afternoon snack and then sleeping at night. I haven’t eaten them just before bed, but I think you may be safe!
