What Kind Of A Sports Parent Are You?

October 11, 2012 by Michelle

The wee ones don’t play sports with the usual competitions with parents on the sidelines cheering them on.  Gymnastics and tae kwon do don’t exactly lend themselves to that.  But I cheer them on in my own way, both in sports and in life in general.  That doesn’t mean I don’t have opinions about sports parents!

This week, Tina Kelley of Mad Hatter Mom asks the #VlogMom prompt:

Do your kids play sports?  Are you a quiet spectator, or do the people in the next county hear you screaming for your kid?

So what are you?  Let me know your opinions, and go visit the other #VlogMom members, too.

I've been a soccer mom and soccer coach/ref wife for nearly 15 years. I've seen it all, and at times it's been ugly.

I've also been very active in martial arts, and served as a tournament judge for many years. I've had parents become very upset over a call, and even storm the ring. It's incredible. The kids, by far, are better behaved.

As a parent, I tended to be the quiet one. Knowing my behavior reflected on my kids and husband. I didn't want to be 'That Parent.”

I am a loud sideline parent.. I admit. However, you will never hear me yelling at the refs or coaches. You will also never hear me cursing. I have also been to far too many games where parents are going a tad bit ballistic over their child's performance.

The kicker for me is seeing/hearing this at football games.. There is a very slim chance that their child can even hear them while down on the field but it never seems to deter..

I am all for the no cell phones… and so right on with being respectful.

My husband was the yeller (more at the refs than at the kids) back in the 80s and 90s. I was the quiet one, occasionally cheering, and I sat far away from my husband because his yelling at the refs embarrassed me.
