Wisdom For My Teenage Self

January 24, 2013 by Michelle

I can’t be the only one who has wished she could go back in time and provide a few bits of advice and wisdom.  As much as I love my life now, I do wish that I could go back and change just a few things.  It’s the benefit of hindsight, but oh if only I knew then what I know now.  This week’s #VlogMom question from Jenn Bullock of Mommy B Knows Best asks just that.

What three things would you tell your teenage self if you could go back in time?

After having done my vlog, I of course came up with a ton of additional advice.  Because who doesn’t have things they learned along the way that they wish they hadn’t learned the hard way (hello bad boyfriends) or that they had taken a slightly different or easier path?  Narrowing it down to just three was hard, but I did it.

More importantly, what advice would you have given your teenage self?  What am I missing?  And ok, go ahead and comment on my lovely senior picture.  Getting to see that alone is worth watching the video, isn’t it?

Thanks… if only I’d had them back then, right?

The beauty of having a 13yo who is like a mini-me of myself at that age, is that I get to say all those things in real life. Just need to make sure I am not trying to relive my own life through her! Results for her so far – better haircuts, more flattering clothes, less anxiety about just about everything, and less smoking.

You smoked? How did I not know that about you? I’m glad to hear that your 14 year old isn’t smoking at least. It’ll be interesting to see what I have to say to my own 13 year old one day.

I love that you found a photo and actually spoke to your teen self! Advice #1 is so important!

Shhh don’t tell, but I have that photo in my family room amidst all the family photos. My mom snuck it in, I think!

Totally wished I hadn’t always played it safe! I’m enjoying my job with a passion and wish iPad found it sooner. Better late than never, right?
    Love your scarf!

I know. Playing it safe isn’t all it’s cut out to be, is it? Definitely better late than never, but oh if we could find our passions early in life and nurture them….

Kudos to you for doing a vlog! I always think I look and sound so stupid when I record myself that I never do them! 😉 My 3 pieces of advice to my teenage self: 1) YOU ARE STRONG AND POWERFUL. You can do anything. The trouble is just deciding what you want to do. 2) TRY HARDER. I should have gone to that more elite school that I applied to “just to see if I could get in”. 3) YOU ARE BEAUTIFUL. I spent years letting the wrong people tell me I wasn’t. (And by beautiful I mean soul-wise.) Great post topic!

Oh I think I look and sound stupid, too. I just have no shame 😉 Yes yes yes – I LOVE your three pieces of advice. You are so right. Wanna lecture some more to my teenage self?

I love that you got out a picture!!! And you are adorable both then and now;). I totally agree with not letting mom and fear stop you from trying!!!

Awww, thanks my friend. Fear stopped me for a long time, but I’m doing my best not to let it now. We’ll see how well that works over the long haul!
